Sequencing a bacterial genome: an overview
نویسنده
چکیده
Since the first bacterial genome, Haemophilus influenzae, was fully sequenced in 1995, over 1000 complete bacterial genome sequences have been determined. DNA sequencing technology has dramatically improved from the first generation, automated Sanger DNA sequencing, which dominated this field for almost two decades, to the current Nextgeneration sequencing protocols. This newer technology dramatically reduces both the time and cost of DNA sequencing, making it possible for a small laboratory to completely sequence the genome of their favorite bacterium. With the enormous amount of information obtained from whole genome sequencing, scientists can readily address a wide range of biological questions that were hitherto beyond their capabilities. In this chapter, strategies of how to sequence genomic DNA as well as how to assemble and annotate a bacterial genome are reviewed and discussed.

Whole-Genome Sequencing of a Clinically Isolated Antibiotic-Resistant Enterococcus faecium EntfacYE
Background and Objective: Enterococcal infections are considered the most common nosocomial infections. Nowadays, enterococci show high resistance to common antibiotics, especially vancomycin. Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium is one of the most common nosocomial infections, which is included in the World Health Organization priority pathogens list for research and development of new an...
متن کاملA Bacterial Analysis Platform: An Integrated System for Analysing Bacterial Whole Genome Sequencing Data for Clinical Diagnostics and Surveillance
Recent advances in whole genome sequencing have made the technology available for routine use in microbiological laboratories. However, a major obstacle for using this technology is the availability of simple and automatic bioinformatics tools. Based on previously published and already available web-based tools we developed a single pipeline for batch uploading of whole genome sequencing data f...
متن کاملOverview of molecular typing methods for outbreak detection and epidemiological surveillance.
Typing methods for discriminating different bacterial isolates of the same species are essential epidemiological tools in infection prevention and control. Traditional typing systems based on phenotypes, such as serotype, biotype, phage-type, or antibiogram, have been used for many years. However, more recent methods that examine the relatedness of isolates at a molecular level have revolutioni...
متن کاملAn overview of the role of bacterial infection in male infertility
An important cause of male infertility is the bacterial infections of the genitourinary tract. These infections affect sperm cell function and whole spermatogenesis and also cause deterioration in spermatogenesis, obstruction of the seminal tract, and impairment of spermatozoa function. The most important bacteria associated with genitourinary tract infections include chlamydia trachomatis, Nei...
